Caterpillar 3Q 2009 profit drops 53 pct on weaker sales

Caterpillar Inc. says its profit plunged in the latest quarter as construction companies bought fewer of its big yellow-and-black machines.

But the company, which operates the Caterpillar Large Engine Center in Lafayette, says it sees rebounding demand worldwide and it lifted its profit outlook for the year.

Caterpillar letting 2,500 go in U.S., but no word on fate of Lafayette workers
