JEFFERSONVILLE — An opening date has been set for the east-end crossing in Jeffersonville as part of the Ohio River Bridges Project. The bridge is expected to open to traffic Sunday, Dec. 18, according to a news release.

The bridge will connect the eastern portion of Jeffersonville to Louisville with eight and a half miles of new road along a 2,500-foot cable-stay bridge across the Ohio River.

A ribbon cutting ceremony is expected to follow the official opening of the bridge. Due to lack of parking, the ceremony will be limited to project officials and government leaders who will be bused to the site.

Drivers interested in being the first to drive across the east-end crossing can register online to participate in a police-escorted caravan, which will take place after the ribbon cutting ceremony. The first 500 registrants will arrive at a closed-off section of the newly finished Interstate 265 between 1:30 and 2:30 p.m. Once the ceremony ends, police will escort drivers across the bridge into Kentucky.

Caravan participants will also receive antique silver commemorative medallions with an etching of the east-end crossing bridge.

Interested participants can register online beginning at 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 10 at eastendcrossing.com/openingday.

The east-end crossing is expected to open to the general public several hours after the caravan, according to the release.

Construction of the bridge began in June 2013 and is part of the $2.3 billion ORBP.
