SOUTH BEND - Leslie Star is a struggling college student, living at home and working part time as she studies toward a bachelor's degree at Indiana University South Bend.
Star attended IU Bloomington for three years but transferred to IUSB this fall so she could live with her mother in South Bend and reduce expenses. Her parents have been helping out with her college bills, but her father, who lives in Ann Arbor, Mich., recently became another victim of the national financial meltdown.
"My dad was laid off two days ago. He didn't expect it at all," said Star, 22. She doesn't want her own college debt to affect the future hopes for her younger siblings.
