Fayette County unemployment climbed in August and remained highest in the state, according to the most recent statistics released by Indiana Department of Workforce Development.

The jobless rate in Fayette County was 11.2 percent in the preliminary report for August, up from 10.9 percent in the report for July.

Adams County ranked second in August at 9.4 percent and Blackford and Lawrence counties both reported 9.2 percent joblessn ess. DuBois County posted the lowest unemployment rate at 4.0 percent.

Wayne County joblessness ranked 24th in August, Franklin County 37th and Union County 54th.

Indiana's preliminary seasonally-adjusted August unemployment rate was 6.3 percent.

Workforce Development reported 1,224 unemployed in Fayette County in August out of a labor force of 10,947. Fayette County's unemployment rate in August 2007 was 7.0 percent.

Unemployment rates in all four Whitewater Valley counties rose slightly in August.

Franklin County had an unemployment rate of 6.6 percent in August, an increase of one-tenth of a percent from the revised figures for July. The number of unemployed was 802 out of a labor force of 12,182. Franklin County's August 2007 unemployment rate was 5.1 percent.

Union County had an unemployment rate of 6.2 percent in August, an increase of one-half percent from the revised figures for July. The number of unemployed was 229 out of a labor force of 3,686. Union County's August 2007 unemployment rate was 4.5 percent.

Wayne County had an unemployment rate of 7.3 percent in August, an increase of two-tenths of a percent from the revised figures for July. The number of unemployed was 2,538 out of a labor force of 34,838. Wayne County's August 2007 unemployment rate was 5.3 percent.

Workforce Development also reported unemployment statistics for 33 Indiana cities in the state with populations of more than 25,000, including Richmond.

The August unemployment rate in Richmond was 7.6 percent, two-tenths of a percent higher than the figure for July. Richmond's August 2007 jobless rate was 5.6 percent.
