Another 40 people will be out of work next week after the most recent layoff at the New Castle Grede Foundry takes effect.
Stewart Davis, executive vice president of Grede Foundries Inc. said the plant announced it would reduce from a three-shift production to two shifts. It's part of an effort for the plant to align its capacity with its backlog of orders.
He said that will involve laying off 40 people indefinitely in production, maintenance and administration. This is the last week of three shifts, he said.
The current economic situation was cited as the reason for the layoff. Davis pointed to the weakness in the manufacturing sector that Grede services.
"Our castings are just not being ordered like they used to be," he said.
It isn't the first time the New Castle foundry has been hit by the economy. On Oct. 30, 2008, 50 of the plant's 300 employees were temporarily laid off.
