INDIANAPOLIS - A recent survey that measured state road systems based on condition and cost-effectiveness placed Indiana 36th in the nation. the exact same spot the state received in the last survey.

The survey, compiled by the Reason Foundation, looks at a number of different data points states submit to the Federal government, including highway spending, traffic congestion, bridge conditions and traffic fatalities. The rankings are based on 2013 numbers, which are the most recent available.

By contrast, neighbor Kentucky ranks 14th in the survey. Ohio came in at 9th and Illinois checked in at 29th.

According to the survey, Indiana ranks well in vehicle fatalities, administrative disbursements per mile and has improved in the number of deficient bridges in the state. It did not rank well in the percentage of rural interstate pavement in poor condition and maintenance disbursements per mile. The state also ranked 36th nationwide in total monetary disbursements per mile, the survey said.

As far as number of highway miles under state control, Indiana ranks exactly in the middle at 25th.
