A syringe exchange program that allows injection drug users to swap used needles for clean ones to reduce the spread of hepatitis C and the human immunodeficiency virus will continue next year.

On Wednesday, the Monroe County commissioners renewed the agreement for the administration of a needle exchange program in the county with Bloomington-based nonprofit Indiana Recovery Alliance for up to $12,000. The money will be paid out of the county health department’s funds.

“The goal is to stop the spread of certain diseases,” County Attorney Margie Rice said.

According to a report provided by the county health department, goals for next year include:

• Creating a community health improvement plan by March 2017 to address local needs.
