In a given week, Dr. Ward Hamlet, an orthopedic surgeon, sees several patients who are deferring surgery.

They need surgery. Arthritis and other problems ravage their joints. And pain is all too familiar. But the recession has caused many to think twice about getting medical care, including surgery. Some people are concerned about losing their jobs if they take time off for recovery. Others don't have a job - or their spouse lost a job and health insurance.
