While many Indiana school systems are looking to lay off a lot of staff, East Porter County School Corp. might only lay off one full-time teacher and one part-time.

The full-time layoff may not even happen if another teacher announces his or her retirement before April 15.

That would leave the school system that covers Washington Township, Morgan Township and Kouts schools with one certain layoff -- one of a kindergarten music teacher who teaches two hours a week.

The reason for layoffs is fewer students at Morgan Elementary School, not the state's switch to sales-tax school funding, Superintendent Rod Gardin said at Monday's East Porter County School Board meeting.

"Over the last 15 years, the school district has been financially prudent," Gardin said.

Also approved Monday was a retirement incentive plan.

Qualified teachers would get a $20,000 lump sum in a health insurance savings account if they retire this year.

The program needs at least seven but not more than 12 teachers to retire for it to be adopted. Five teachers announced retirement before the board approved the incentive plan, so only two more are needed by April 15.

Also at the meeting, the board approved again allowing students from outside the district to enroll in the system.
