Raytheon lays off 77 at local avionics center in Indianapolis

Raytheon Technical Services Co. LLC today eliminated 77 jobs at its avionics development center at 6125 E. 21st St. in Indianapolis.

Raytheon spokesman Gerald Petrie said the impact to overall employment at the center was blunted by the fact that Raytheon has hired more than 100 engineers, scientists and other personnel over the past year. About 1,200 people work at the facility.

Still, "it was a difficult decision to make," he said.

Petrie said many of the jobs eliminated were the result of a business decision to focus more on engineering and less on manufacturing.

Waltham, Mass.-based parent Raytheon Co. designs, builds and overhauls airplane electronics used in such aircraft as the F-16 fighter and V22 Osprey tilt-rotor aircraft.

"We don't anticipate any more work force reductions in the near future," Petrie added.
