Forty-one employees of Ameristar East Chicago have been laid off.

Company officials announced that "difficult" economic conditions led the Las Vegas-based casino operator to cut 244 staff members nationwide and constrict the work force through changes in "scheduling and staffing practices and attrition," according to an Ameristar news release.

The cuts should save the company $20 million annually, according to the release.

"Regrettably, we have reduced our work force as the economic downturn is more prolonged than many economists expected," CEO Gordon Kanofsky said in the release.
