The pressure to find money for tax relief, full-day kindergarten and other items on the General Assembly's list is growing stronger - as the success of a slot-machine bill in a House committee attests. The state's horse-racing interests have been pushing for slots at the tracks for more than five years, and this could be the year legislators surrender.
The price, however, would be a dramatic expansion of gambling - essentially the addition of two land-based casinos. Lawmakers could not only avoid the expansion but also reduce existing gambling and reap revenues by finally regulating and taxing Cherry Masters and allowing them in bars and service clubs.
