SOUTH BEND -- Problems at Midwest oil refineries continue to affect gas prices in the region.

While gas prices across most of the nation are down about 2 cents from a week ago, the average cost of gas in Indiana and Michigan rose more than 23 cents over the past week with prices locally reaching as high as $4.29 on Monday.

In a news release nearly two weeks ago, Wallace Tyner of Purdue University said that Midwest refineries were causing the gas hike, but that the prices would drop when the refineries came back online.

That hasn't happened yet.
