Alliance Steel in Gary is expanding and adding a new tubular division.

The Gary-based steel service center plans to put its new tubular products division on the same campus as its corporate headquarters and coil processing facility at 2700 E. 5th Ave. in downtown Gary, where the northern terminus of Interstate 65 intersects with Dunes Highway.

Alliance is offering structural tubing, mechanical tubing, square tubing and rectangular tubing that's used in a number of industries, including construction, fitness equipment agriculture, automotive, transportation, construction, government and material handling.

Production of tubular products is already underway in downtown Gary and will expand through next year.

Alliance Tubular Products will make specialty sections and metric shapes without new tooling that adds time and cost. It can make a range of square and rectangular sizes, as well as high-strength steel tubing and electric resistance welded products.

It operates a fully automated direct form line that can produce up to 50-foot lengths.

“We are excited to announce our strategic expansion into the tubular products market,” President and COO Drew Gross said. “Our newest expansion signifies our dedication to delivering an even higher level of products and value add to our customers. The addition of Alliance Tubular Products into our existing portfolio of companies (Alliance Steel, Alliance Processing Corp., and Alliance Fabrication and Manufacturing) signifies our commitment to long term growth and sustainability."

Vice President Carl Johnson is leading the new division, which diversifies Alliance's portfolio. The steel distributor, which also has service centers in Atlanta and Memphis, sells a variety of hot-rolled, cold-rolled, coated, pre-paint and stainless steel products.

It offers a variety of services, including coil slitting, heavy gauge slitting, cut to length, stretcher leveling, degreasing, laser cutting, toll processing and metallurgical testing.

Alliance Steel aims to continue to offer short lead times in its new tubular business.

"We have achieved an extremely high level of vertical integration across the family of companies at our state or the art Gary," Gross said. "This milestone significantly bolsters our standing as a trusted and all-encompassing provider of steel solutions in the industry.”

In 2020, Alliance Steel invested $20 million to open a new service center in the 300,000-square-foot ATCO-Gary Metals Technologies sheet metal manufacturing factory. It hired 130 workers at the service center, where it processes and distributes steel that's used in commercial buildings, office ceilings, lawnmower blades, satellite dishes and Mercedes-Benz cars. The company relocated its corporate office from Illinois to the site in Gary just across from U.S. Steel's Gary Works mill.
