A hotel, gas station, travel plaza and fast food restaurant are in the works next to Amazon’s massive data center and GM/Samsung SDI's electric vehicle battery plant east of New Carlisle.

It would add to the major transformation that has already begun of flat expanses of fertile farmland, as contractors busily erect Amazon buildings nearby along an ever-busier Indiana 2.

But, before the hotel and other services can happen, the St. Joseph County Council will have to approve rezoning that 40-acre patch of farmland at Indiana 2 and Strawberry/Larrison Road.

The proposed rezoning — from agricultural to commercial — will come to the council’s meeting at 6 p.m. Sept. 10 for a first reading. No public hearing will be held on the matter at that time. The council will assign it to a council committee before it comes back to the council for a hearing and vote on Oct. 8.

The rezoning would also tentatively come for a hearing and recommendation from the county’s Area Plan Commission on Sept. 17.
