BUNKER HILL — SpectronRx is set to invest $4.5 million in a 10-acre expansion of their Grissom medical isotope production facility, creating 26 new jobs.
According to a release, SpectronRx purchased a 10-acre site near Grissom Air Reserve Base in late 2021. Their current isotope production facility houses two cyclotrons within two interconnected buildings that total 20,000 square feet.
The expansion will add an additional 18,000 square feet to SpectronRx’s Grissom facilities, according to the release, and will also contain additional cyclotrons. Radioisotopes produced by SpectronRx are used to detect and treat cancer, heart disease, thyroid disease, arthritis and Alzheimer’s.
The Miami County Commissioners voted Monday to vacate about 595 feet of Air Tech Drive to allow for SpectronRx’s expansion.
According to the International Atomic Energy Agency, cyclotrons are a type of particle accelerator that use electromagnetic fields to propel charged particles to high speeds and energies. Those charged particles are turned into radioisotopes, which are used to diagnose and treat cancers and other diseases.
