The local Ivy Tech Community College campus started this academic year with more than 6,200 degree-seeking students, an enrollment that for the first time surpassed Purdue University Fort Wayne’s head count.

But that number released by the Indiana Commission for Higher Education doesn’t fully capture the popularity of Ivy Tech Fort Wayne, which serves an 11-county area and includes the Kosciusko County satellite location in Warsaw.

The campus has counted more than 18,000 people as students this school year and hopes to reach about 19,000. This tally represents everyone served by Ivy Tech programs, including those in apprenticeships, noncredit classes and teens taking dual-credit courses, allowing them to simultaneously earn high school and college credit, said Susan Brown, vice chancellor of enrollment services and student success.
