While any ground breaking may be a few years away, Beacon Inc. has begun the application process for a $5 million state grant to go toward a new permanent supportive housing project in Bloomington.
Beacon is a local service provider for the area's unhoused population. The organization operates the Shalom Community Center, Crawford Homes program and other related initiatives to alleviate the plight of those experiencing chronic homelessness.
Even with several options already available, many people who are homeless in Bloomington, some of whom are veterans, do not have a warm, safe roof over their heads as temperatures continue to drop.

With support from state and community leaders, Beacon hopes to add a new housing complex for those in need within the next three to five years.
Beacon is applying to be included in the Indiana Supportive Housing Institute, an annual program that provides funding for and training on how to develop and operate supportive housing for those experiencing homelessness.
