Studies about the financial impact to Fulton County of a proposed wind turbine farm will soon be underway.

Fulton County Commissioners approved Monday a request by Fulton Economic Development Corp. Director Terry Lee to commission two reviews about the proposed 17,000-acre wind farm for northern Fulton and southern Marshall counties.

NextEra Energy Resources, Juno Beach, Fla., is designing the turbine farm with between 40 and 70 turbines.

The first review is a financial impact analysis by Plymouth accounting firm Umbaugh Associates at $15,000. FEDCO will pay indianapolis law firm Barnes and Thornburg $10,000 to review legal matters of the wind farm. Financing for the reviews will come out of a $28,000 fund FEDCO established last year for the project.

Lee wants to focus on property tax impacts, how much NextEra will invest in the county and the county’s decommission plans. Marshall County officials are conducting the same reviews,
Lee said.

“If it is accepted well in the community, it will give us more leverage,” Lee said. NextEra wants a tax abatement of up to 10 years.

Lee would like to schedule at least one public informational meeting to share findings.
