Game developer Twisted Pixel Games is moving from Madison to Austin, Texas, the Austin American-Statesman newspaper reported today.
"Austin's reputation as a digital media powerhouse and magnet for skilled game developers had the greatest influence on our decision," Michael Wilford, a co-founder of the company and its chief executive, told the Austin newspaper.
Twisted Pixel Games chose Austin over other cities that included Seattle, Wash., and Raleigh, N.C., according to the Austin story.
The newspaper reported that Twisted Pixel will start with 12 to 15 employees within the first three months and expects to have 25 within three years. The Twisted Pixel Web site lists 11 current employees of the two-year-old company.
Twisted Pixel develops games for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Nintendo Wii, Nintendo DS, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.
Twisted Pixel's action-adventure game "The Maw" for the Xbox Live Arcade is expected to be released early next year.
Last week "The Maw" was announced as the winner of the PAX 10 Audience Choice Award. The selection was made by people attending the recent Penny Arcade Expo in Seattle who voted for their choice from among 10 independent games selected by judges.
In Madison, Twisted Pixel's office is at 606 E. Main St.
The Crispy Gamer Web site reported today that lucrative cash incentives from the State of Texas played a big part in Twisted Pixel's move. The Texas Legislature last year passed an incentives bill to attract video game studios to the state.
