David Johnson was more than a little disappointed in the final totals for this year’s Montgomery United Fund For You campaign.

The MUFFY executive director said the campaign raised $355,580, or just 71 percent of its $501,000 goal.

“It was horrific,” he said. “This represents the lowest campaign total raised since 1992.”

Johnson said the poor local economy coupled with the dramatic increase in fundraising efforts by other non-profits this year took a major toll on the annual MUFFY campaign.

“2012 marked the first time in seven years that the number of individuals making gifts to MUFFY decreased,” Johnson said. “We had seen six straight years of donor increases.”

He believes the decrease in donors is directly tied to employment levels that remain significantly depressed in the area.

Additionally, the average gift per donor decreased by more than 10 percent this year.
