Delaware County has maintained its standing as first in the state in the number of discovered and dismantled methamphetamine labs.

In statistics released by Indiana State Police, 68 meth labs — and they ranged from “one-pot” labs that sometimes amount to little more than chemicals in a soft-drink bottle to more elaborate operations — were found in the county between Jan. 1 and April 30.

To put that in perspective, the county with the second highest total of discovered labs during the four-month period was Noble, with 24.

Only five of Indiana’s other 90 counties had 20 labs or more.

Scott O’Dell, who oversees the Muncie Police Department’s narcotics unit, said Thursday he believed Muncie and Delaware County had no more meth producers than other Indiana communities with a similar population.

“It’s just better enforcement,” O’Dell said. “We’ve just taken a more proactive sight.”
