Although Indiana has now officially opted out of participating in a set of national academic standards known as Common Core State Standards, area educators say the replacements currently being developed aren't likely to be vastly different.

It's the timetable of the rollout, they say, that concerns them most.

The Indiana State Board of Education will vote on the new standards next month and they're set to be adopted on July 1.

That, some say, doesn't give school districts much time to train teachers and adjust curriculum.

"We're hopeful the state would provide guidance about the timeline," said Dan Towner, executive director for curriculum and instruction with School City of Mishawaka.
