The town of Spencer is about halfway toward its goal of raising $25,000 to get a matching state grant to build a public restroom facility in the heart of downtown.
A fundraising campaign the local Chamber of Commerce dubbed "It's Go Time" has so far collected $11,825. Organizers hope to raise the $25,000 by July 26 in order to get another $25,000 from the Indiana Housing and Community Development Authority.
The project will include three restrooms under one roof in a facility to be located in what was the parking lot of the Old Exchange Bank building on the courthouse square. A mural on the side of a nearby building, to be painted by local artist Israel Hogan, is part of the downtown revitalization project.
"This will be a wonderful addition to our county, not only for our residents and merchants but visitors, too," said Marce King, executive director of the Owen County Chamber of Commerce and the Owen County Economic Development Corp.
The facility will be located along the town's MyPath walking trail. The Owen County commissioners this year voted to close the courthouse and grounds to local festivals and events, which meant the restrooms there would not be available for public use during events such as Spencer's Pride Festival. So King and other community leaders started talking about ways around the decision to keep events downtown.
