Greencastle city officials have unveiled a nearly $19 million proposed budget for 2026 with an eye toward future repercussions from state and federal spending reductions that will impact local government.

That means the proposed 2026 budget is nearly $1 million less than 2025 — or $989,236 to be exact.

While the 2025 budget focused on roads and sidewalks, about the only spending increase proposed for 2026 will be in engineering fees, Mayor Lynda Dunbar said.

“We’ve increased engineering a little more,” the mayor said, “because we’re going to have to do some more bidding on projects for next year.”

Dunbar made her remarks during a public hearing on the 2026 City of Greencastle budget at a special session of the City Council Monday night at City Hall.

Not a discouraging word was heard from the public on the proposed $18,662,255 budget, which includes an adopted tax levy of $4,719,319 based on an adopted tax rate of $1.6158 (per $100 assessed value). The city’s General Fund of $6,743,720 includes an adopted tax levy of $2,638,896.
