SOUTH BEND ? A $195,000 study to explore a potential new community center in New Carlisle gained unanimous approval Tuesday from the St. Joseph County Redevelopment Commission.
The center could be small, suitable for residents to gather for games and meetings, or could be larger with even sports facilities for local schools, Bill Schalliol, the county’s executive director of economic development, told the commission. Or it could be multiple centers, he said.
And, he added, “This is not a commitment to build the center.”
The study, by the architectural and engineering firm Wightman, would explore and design the possibilities, Schalliol said. The first phase, at $105,000, would look at the “who, what, where, why, how and when” of such a community center and would run through the coming summer. The second phase, at $90,000, would look into design, programs and financing for the project.
Also, the commission approved ratifying a contract that would enable infrastructure for the development of about 75 acres northeast of U.S. 20 and Spruce Road, just east of New Carlisle.
As expected: Proposals on tap Tuesday could bring amenities, housing and more to New Carlisle area
