LAFAYETTE — After Primient announced a co-location partnership with Sustainea nearly one year ago, the new plant-based alternative plastics maker has laid out plans for its $430 million plant in a requested pair of 10-year tax abatements.
Ground is expected to be broken on the project by the end of 2026, Sustainea CEO Gustavo Sergi said during Thursday's Lafayette Redevelopment Commission meeting, with plant production to begin in 2028.
According to plans presented to the commission, 95 jobs would initially be created with an average salary of $96,000. As operations within the plant grow, Sergi said the company would see a total of 191 jobs in the plant.
Of the $430 million the company plans to invest in the Lafayette plant, Sergi said about $200 million will be used to buy equipment, real estate and other soft investments. Sergi said the Lafayette plant is the first U.S. investment outside Brazil, where the company was founded.
Lafayette Mayor Tony Roswarski said the plant jobs, wages and construction jobs created by the project are important for the community, as well as the further building of the city's relationship with Primient.
