Most of the state’s corn crop is in good condition after a string of cool, dry days last week.
According to the Indiana Crop and Weather Report released by the National Agricultural Statistics Service Monday, 60 percent of corn that has been planted is in good condition, and 17 percent is considered excellent.
For the week ending Sunday, 98 percent of the intended corn acreage in the state had been planted, compared to 94 percent last week and 95 percent for the five-year average. Ninety percent of corn has now emerged, up from only 77 percent for the week ending June 2. This time last year, 100 percent had emerged.
Soybeans still lag behind last year’s planting schedule but continue to catch up. As of Sunday, 87 percent of the intended acreage had been planted, compared to 76 percent the week before. Last year at this time, 99 percent had been planted. So far, 70 percent of soybeans have emerged, up from 48 percent a week ago but down from 93 percent at this time last year.
