INDIANAPOLIS — Indiana students who graduate from high school a year early would receive financial help with their college costs under a bill proposed in the state Senate.

Senate Bill 497, sponsored by Sen. Dennis Kruse, R-Auburn, would provide $3,500 scholarships to students who graduate from a public high school in fewer than seven semesters. The idea is one of the planks in Republican Gov. Mitch Daniels' agenda for wide-ranging education reform in Indiana.

Sen. Carlin Yoder, an Elkhart County Republican and co-sponsor of S.B. 497, said the concept seems like a "no-brainer" to him.
