The Eastern Greene Board of School Trustees is offering a $20,000 incentive to teachers or administrators who declare for early retirement.
The board, on Monday night, stipulated that the early retirements have to be requested between April 15 and the final day of school on May 27.
Supt. Ty Mungle said the board and administration anticipate between 4 and 12 staff members might qualify for the early retirements.
"We need a minimum of four and the maximum we will accept is 12," Mungle said.
The board is looking for ways to curtail General Fund expenses to compensate for significant cuts in state assistance to the school district. The exact amounts are dependent upon what the state legislature comes up with during the current session.
By 2012, Mungle said Eastern Greene will see its budget reduced by nearly 10 percent, from $8.8 million down to $8 million. That amount is set by the state based upon a school funding formula which Mungle said predicts a drop of 10 students per year over the next two years.
