INDIANAPOLIS — A second Indiana Senate committee has voted to advance an Arizona-style immigration bill, despite reservations from several Republicans.

The legislation aimed at cracking down on illegal immigration sailed through the Senate Committee on Pensions and Labor with little opposition last week, and it passed through the Senate Appropriations Committee by a vote of 8-5 on Thursday to make it eligible for a hearing in the full Senate.

One Republican — Sen. Tom Wyss of Fort Wayne — joined the four Democrats on the committee in opposing Senate Bill 590. Some other Republicans voted for it but added that they hope to see it changed further as it moves through the General Assembly.
