PORTAGE | The Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District said its average daily peak ridership on the South Shore trains was up 2 percent in April compared to a year ago.

Weekend ridership also was up 4 percent, NICTD representative Joe Crnkovich said at the Northwestern Indiana Regional Planning Commission's Transportation Committee Policy meeting Tuesday.

"A lot of people are discovering us in this era of high gas prices," he said.

The South Shore Line will not provide train or bus service between South Bend and the Dune Park station from this Saturday to Monday.

The NICTD also has begun its Gary Metro Platform Rehabilitation Project. Crnkovich said once the project is completed, NICTD hopes to have it "looking as good as when it opened in the mid–1980s."
