Dover — Several changes are coming to the Western Boone County Community School Corporation, Superintendent Dr. Judi Hendrix announced at Monday’s school board meeting.

After 17 years at Granville Wells Elementary School, popular principal John Waymire will be retiring at the end of the year.

“I personally want to thank John Waymire for his years of service to Granville Wells,” Hendrix said. “When he came here 17 years ago, he just wanted to find a place to work and retire from. And he found that.”

And due to declining enrollment numbers, the board also approved additional cuts possibly affecting all three schools in the corporation.

Personnel cuts include one elementary media specialist, one Thorntown Elementary teacher, one high school guidance counselor, and one high school special education teacher.

The teacher cut at Thorntown is based on declining enrollment specific to the school, Hendrix said.

And a media assistant will replace the media specialist.

With the elimination of a guidance counselor, the junior-senior high school guidance department will be reconfigured, Hendrix said. Now with three guidance counselors and one graduation coach, next year the school will have two guidance counselors and a graduation coach/social worker. The graduation coach position this year is paid by a one-year grant, but Hendrix said next year the corporation will assume the cost.
