TERRE HAUTE — Vigo County School Corp. enrollment is 15,780, down 208 students this year, Superintendent Dan Tanoos said Friday.
That’s about a 1.3 percent decline. While the numbers are somewhat better than initially anticipated, the loss of students remains a concern, particularly if it becomes a trend, he said.
State funding is based largely on enrollment, and Friday was the official enrollment count date that will be used by the state for funding formula purposes.
The district typically receives between $5,000 and $6,000 per student, said Donna Wilson, chief financial officer.
It receives additional funding for vocational education and special education enrollments.
The biggest enrollment declines came at the high school level. Terre Haute South Vigo is down 99 students, to 1,863, while West Vigo High School is down 54, to 646. Terre Haute North enrollment is up 12 students.
Enrollment is down 162 at the high school level, eight at the middle school level and 38 at the elementary level.
Tanoos said he doesn’t have a reason for the decline other than suggesting that people are leaving the community.
