Fayette County unemployment ranked seventh in the state in the report for March, according to the most recent statistics released by Indiana Workforce Development.

The jobless rate in Fayette County remained unchanged at 14.8 percent in the preliminary report for March. LaGrange (18.9 percent), Elkhart (18.8 percent), Noble (17.5 percent), Steuben (16.5 percent), Miami and Starke (both 15.1 percent) counties had higher unemployment rates. Fayette County joblessness ranked sixth in February.

Daviess County posted the lowest March unemployment rate at 5.8 percent.

Wayne County unemployment ranked 29th in March, Union County 35th and Franklin County 53rd.

Workforce Development reported 1,551 unemployed in Fayette County in March out of a labor force of 10,454. Fayette County's unemployment rate in March 2008 was 10.7 percent.

Unemployment rates in the three other Whitewater Valley counties were mixed in March.

  • Franklin County had an unemployment rate of 10.8 percent in March, a drop of three-tenths of a percent from the revised figures for February. The number of unemployed was 1,281 out of a labor force of 11,808. Franklin County's March 2008 unemployment rate was 6.9 percent.

  • Union County had an unemployment rate of 11.8 percent in March, an increase of seven-tenths of a percent from the revised figures for February. The number of unemployed was 413 out of a labor force of 3,501. Union County's March 2008 unemployment rate was 6.5 percent.

  • Wayne County had an unemployment rate of 12.5 percent in March, an increase of one-half percent from the revised figures for February. The number of unemployed was 4,264 out of a labor force of 34,042. Wayne County's March 2008 unemployment rate was 6.4 percent.
