Wayne County’s needle exchange program continued to collect used needles on Thursday, now in its fourth month of operation.

Seven people came to the syringe exchange this month, five of whom were new to the program, said Kim Flanigan, supervisor of operations of the Wayne County Health Department.

The needle exchange program distributed 700 new syringes and 253 used ones were returned, Flanigan said. The November returns were nearly identical to October’s return numbers, when 255 used syringes were brought in.

Through four months, the exchange has had 21 visits with 515 used needles returned and 2,670 new ones given out.

The needle exchange program is open once a month for two hours, which appears to be adequate at this time.
