PLYMOUTH -- Eastern or Central, Marshall County wants to stay on the same time with St. Joseph County.
Marshall County commissioners filed an additional petition with the federal government to make that request.
Earlier, Marshall and St. Joseph counties asked the U.S. Department of Transportation to move them from Eastern time to Central.
The federal agency tentatively recommended placing St. Joseph on Central time, but to keep Marshall County on Eastern.
Elkhart County did not request a change, but the DOT could decide to move Elkhart County to Central time if it's in the best interest of the region.
The federal government will have four public hearings in Indiana. Anyone may present positions and views for or against proposals regarding all 17 counties that requested a change. No pre-registration is required. Those who wish to speak must register where the hearing takes place.
The South Bend public hearing is scheduled for 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. Monday, Nov. 21, at the Student Activity Center, Indiana University South Bend, 1700 Mishawaka Ave., South Bend.
A final decision is expected in January. Any changes to Indiana time zones will take effect April 2, 2006, when the nation observes daylight-saving time.
