INDIANAPOLIS — A package of tools to help charter schools expand their presence in Indiana is moving ahead in the General Assembly.
After listening to more than four hours of testimony last week and discussing the proposal again for more than two hours Monday, the House Education Committee voted 8-5 along party lines — Republicans for, Democrats against — to forward the measure to the full House of Representatives.
House Bill 1002 would expand the potential pool of charter sponsors from school boards, public four-year universities and the mayor of Indianapolis to include a new state charter board, mayors of cities with more than 35,000 residents and, with the state board of education's approval, some private colleges and universities.
