Indiana schools have been moving toward full implementation of the Common Core State Standards for two years. But following this year’s legislative session, educators are not sure Common Core is here to stay.

“I’m worried,” said Carol Gardiner, assistant superintendent at Richland-Bean Blossom Community School Corp. “I hadn’t been worried until most recently. Just watching what’s happening, I’m very worried that legislative action can stop the good work we’re doing here in the schools.”

In 2010, the Indiana State Board of Education unanimously voted to adopt the Common Core standards.

To date, 45 states have adopted the standards, which aim, in part, at bringing “a consistent, clear understanding of what students are expected to learn,” throughout the country.
