Indiana public high school students who graduate early soon might earn a reward: a scholarship for those who immediately enroll in college or other qualifying postsecondary training.

Encouraging more students to go on to college is the goal of Indiana Senate Bill 497, which has been approved by that chamber. The measure hasn’t seen action in the House of Representatives yet.

The proposed early graduation scholarship program would provide $3,500 scholarships to students who graduate from a public high school in fewer than seven semesters. The measure is part of Republican Gov. Mitch Daniels’ agenda for education reform in Indiana.
