Indiana University has increased its minimum wage for appointed staff and plans to bump it up again in five months. The move continues a plan that was paused during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We believe it is essential that IU provide fair, adequate and competitive compensation for all of our employees, and this increase will underscore the value we place on our employees, who deserve to be rewarded for their dedicated and outstanding efforts,” Michael McRobbie, university president, said Friday during a virtual meeting of the IU Board of Trustees.

The board unanimously approved McRobbie’s recommendation to immediately increase the university’s minimum wage from $12.33 an hour to $13.66 an hour. It will be increased to $15 an hour July 1.

Bringing the university’s minimum wage to $15 an hour has been in the works for years. In 2017, the board approved a plan to reach that goal in four phases, with the final phase coming soon after the university’s bicentennial in 2020.

The plan was put on hold because of financial uncertainty stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic. McRobbie said the time has come to resume that plan. He also offered Patrick Shoulders, vice chairman of the board, the opportunity to make a motion for approval.
