The tentative details:» Would triple the number of buses on Central Indiana's roads over the next 25 years, reducing wait times to 10 to 20 minutes and providing service seven days a week.» Would establish a commuter rail line linking Noblesville, Downtown Indianapolis and Franklin.» Would deploy a rail-like service called bus rapid transit, or BRT, along Washington Street from the Far Eastside to Indianapolis International Airport. The price tag:» $2.4 billion.» Local taxpayers will be responsible for $1.2 billion of that, which amounts to $15 per household per month for 25 years. Federal funds cover the rest.» It's still up for debate what type of tax would be used. Suggestions include an additional sales and income tax.The process:» In 2011, state and local elected officials, business leaders and policymakers will hash out the details of a regional transit plan.» The General Assembly will approve language for county-by-county referenda.» Voters will decide on the referenda in May or, most likely, November of 2012.
