HANCOCK COUNTY — The county set another record for the number of COVID-19 cases reported in a day on Thursday, adding 33 to its total.

Statewide, the number of reported infections also set a record, and the number of people in the hospital for treatment also neared the all-time high.

All of the recent cases were confirmed late Wednesday, Oct. 28, according to the Indiana State Department of Health’s online COVID-19 dashboard. It raised the county’s total to 1,302.

The latest number tops the county’s previous daily high of COVID-19 cases reported for Oct. 21, which had 24. Oct. 23 saw 22 cases, tied with April 27 for the county’s third-highest day.

No COVID-19 deaths were added to Hancock County’s total Thursday, keeping the number at 44. More than 330 new tests were administered, raising that total to 29,904. Almost 20,000 individuals have been tested.

The county’s seven-day positivity rate for all tests from Oct. 16 to 22 is 7.1%, and the cumulative rate is 4.5%. Its seven-day positivity rate for unique individuals is 11.9% from Oct. 16 to 22, and the cumulative rate is 6.6%.

Craig Felty, vice president, chief nursing officer and chief operating officer of Hancock Regional Hospital, said Thursday that the hospital was treating three COVID-19 inpatients.

Indiana saw a new highest total of cases reported in a day as well on Thursday, with 3,649 that were confirmed between Oct. 24 and 28. The state’s total stands at 172,730.

Another 33 COVID-19 deaths reported Thursday but occurring between Aug. 20 and Oct. 28 raised that total to 4,024.

The state also added 39,180 new tests administered between July 20 and Oct. 28 and 14,321 new individuals tested, resulting in totals of more than 2.8 million and more than 1.67 million, respectively.

Indiana’s seven-day positivity rate for all tests from Oct. 16 to 22 is 7.3% and the cumulative rate is 5.9%. Its seven-day positivity rate for unique individuals from Oct. 16 to 22 is 14%, with a cumulative rate of 10.3%.

The statewide COVID-19 hospital census was 1,733, nearing the all-time high of 1,799 in mid-April. Almost 27% of the state’s ICU beds are available and more than 78% of its ventilators are available.
