The Bowen Center recently announced a new facility expansion in Fort Wayne which will directly impact Huntington County residents upon its predicted opening at the end of May.
Shelly Snyder, director of the Bowen Center’s Huntington office, says the expansion will offer methadone prescriptions and counseling for those seeking addiction treatment. The new recovery center will impact residents within 100 miles of Fort Wayne, which Snyder says will directly benefit Huntington County.
“The recovery center will offer medical-based treatment with licensed counselors to assist with coping skills and challenges,” Snyder explained.
Snyder says both medication and counseling go hand-in-hand with the Bowen Center’s mission of preventing a patient from succumbing to relapse.
The recovery center is part of a statewide effort to increase options for Hoosiers seeking addiction treatment. Snyder says the center is one of nine set to open in the near future, but the Fort Wayne location was one of five originally selected.
The Bowen Center is also offering more local services, particularly for those in the Huntington County Jail with drug related charges.
“We facilitate groups in the jail and work with the jail commander to provide counseling services to inmates with addiction each week. Once the common area is opened in the jail, we plan to offer skill coaching and substance counseling,” Snyder said. “We hope to help with the overcrowing in the jail by getting them education and early treatment. When we offer counseling, they are more likely to seek outpatient care.”
Snyder says that by working with the judicial system, the Bowen Center tries to get inmates who struggle with addiction scheduled for Recovery Works vouchers so that they may seek treatment.
Huntington County residents are also able to utilize the Bowen Center’s resources. Snyder says she has seen an overall increase in access to care across the state. Those who will be utilizing the new recovery center in Fort Wayne will still meet regularly with a local licensed psychiatrist for treatment.
