Indiana House requires transparency on jobs deals

INDIANAPOLIS | The state's economic development agency would have to meet new transparency standards under legislation approved 98-0 by the Indiana House Tuesday.

Senate Bill 162, which now goes to the governor, makes public all business agreements made by the Indiana Economic Development Corp.

It also requires an independent accounting firm tally the number of actual jobs created through IEDC deals and detail the incentives used to produce those jobs.

House Democratic Leader Scott Pelath, D-Michigan City, said he hopes the legislation will prevent "overly exuberant" IEDC estimates of new jobs in the future.

IEDC President Eric Doden said the agency is looking forward to opening its books.
