VALPARAISO — The Porter County Board of Commissioners on Tuesday joined some of the region’s mayors in taking a stand against House Joint Resolution No. 6, which would amend the state constitution to ban same-sex marriage.
Valparaiso Mayor Jon Costas and Hammond Mayor Thomas McDermott have already taken a stand against the resolution in recent weeks.
The commissioners’ resolution notes that state law already provides marriage can only be between a man and a woman, and that several leaders of the state’s business community have said the amendment would hurt efforts to attract and retain talent and be competitive in a global market.
The amendment, the commissioners’ resolution states, “would impede the ability of Porter County to attract new business, diversify our tax base, and draw badly needed jobs for our citizens.”
