A key group of Purdue University stakeholders on Monday spoke out against a proposed constitutional same-sex marriage ban in Indiana.
The University Senate, which includes faculty, students, staff and administrators, approved a resolution that said it was in opposition to House Joint Resolution 6, which if approved would codify Indiana's gay marriage ban in the constitution.
Opponents of the proposed gay marriage ban say it would be contrary to Purdue's equal opportunity policies and would harm university recruitment.
University Senators approved the resolution by a wide margin. They were originally planning to only discuss the matter but senators temporarily suspended the rules so that the resolution could be voted on.
The University Senate resolution reads, “The Purdue University Senate opposes the Indiana State Constitutional amendment concerning marriage (HJR-6) and therefore strongly urges the Indiana General Assembly and the Governor of Indiana to oppose adoption of HJR-6.”
