After years of study and active opposition, a course is set for a new DeKalb County jail.
Voters will decide on the $23 million jail in a May 2018 referendum as county leaders proceed with plans for a separate building for community corrections and work release.
Earlier options combined those with the new jail complex.
While only about 30 years old, the current jail has reached its life expectancy, said Sheriff Don Lauer. Building problems and inmate overcrowding demand something be done.
“The biggest problem we have is overcrowding. We just don't have enough room here,” Lauer said. “And there's a lot of problems with the jail settling. There's a lot of physical problems with the jail itself.”
But some folks aren't pleased with the price tag. A group called Concerned Citizens of DeKalb County believe overcrowding can be resolved. Most jail inmates are in for low-level crimes that can be addressed outside of jail, said David Powers, chairman of the group. Those facing more serious crimes can be transferred to other county jails at nominal cost, he added.
