SOUTH BEND -- South Bend’s school board is the latest in Indiana to reject former state school Superintendent Tony Bennett’s A through F school grading system.
The board voted unanimously Monday evening for a resolution that disavows the validity of the system.
Last week, Fort Wayne Community Schools’ board adopted a similar resolution.
Bennett, a Republican and most recently the education commissioner in Florida, resigned from that post amid media reports that he made changes to the A through F formula when he worked in Indiana to benefit Christel House, a charter school in Indianapolis that’s run by a Republican donor.
Despite South Bend schools’ new resolution, since it’s a legal requirement, the district, like all others in the state, will still be assigned a letter grade by the state.
