Indiana House Democrats' budget plan taps rainy day fund

INDIANAPOLIS - The one-year budget plan passed Tuesday by Democrats in a House committee would restore higher-education funding, reverse millions in cuts Gov. Mitch Daniels proposed and tap the rainy day fund to cover additional spending.

"The proposal focuses on maintaining our educational infrastructure," said House Ways and Means Chairman Bill Crawford, D-Indianapolis. "That's job creation - that's our stimulus."

House Bill 1001 - the last of three segments of the state budget - passed the Ways and Means Committee on Tuesday along party lines, 14-9.
